2019’s Christmas in Winter saw the BMW Car Club Gauteng head off to Rustenburg’s Orion Safari Lodge. Situated at the foot of the Rustenburg Kloof, we were greeted with some picturesque views and a number of curious peacocks upon check-in and enjoyed a calm late afternoon settling in and waiting for a couple of late arrivals.
Friday night dinner, with its black, white and a touch of gold or silver theme, was a truly intimate affair with a delicious buffet, good conversation and lots of laughs. The weather was perfectly mild as we chatted and sipped on coffee and wine till long after dinner.
We had a wonderful spread to choose from on Saturday morning for breakfast and with the sunny and warm weather an outing was definitely in order. Some decided to enjoy the pristine, if not slightly cold, water, slides and rides at Sun City’s Valley of the Waves. Others marvelled at the wonders of nature in the Pilansberg Nature Reserve with a leisurely game drive. All-in-all it was a wonderful day in which work and responsibilities could be forgotten as we breathed in the fresh air.
In the evening we arrived to a dining room beautifully decorated with red and white linen. Christmas trees, reindeer and snowmen adorned the corners of the room and numerous gifts were piled under the tree. We loaded our plates with melt-in-your-mouth carpaccio, gloriously aromatic chicken curry, delectable desserts and a variety of other options from the perfectly prepared buffet. The highlight of the evening was, as ever, the kids handing out Christmas gifts to everyone’s delight.
Breakfast on Sunday was, yet again, filled with laughter and a couple of sugar-in-your-yoghurt type practical jokes. After breakfast it was time to say goodbye to everyone and leave behind yet another delightful Christmas in Winter weekend as we drove the four wheeled monsters we love so much safely back home.
