On Sunday the 9th of June 2019, the BMW Car Club Gauteng hosted the second all Tar Autocross at the Rock Raceway. The Rock Raceway in Brakpan is a very impressive facility which has a beautifully smooth tar surface and track.
We were greeted with a chilly welcome in the dark early in the morning in Brakpan. We then set out the cones in the same layout as the prior year. With the timing equipment for the track set up, driver’s briefing and a prayer then followed before everyone did a slow sighting run in convey to get a feel for the lay of the land. Each competitor would get a total of four runs each with three runs that counted. The average of the remaining runs would then count toward trophy honours later in the day.
Each competitor would line up in the arena at the start line and once signalled that timing was ready, they broke the beam to start the timer.First up is a gentle 180 degree right hander into a tight slalom followed by a gentle 180 degree left hander into a short straight then a tight right hand u-turn into another short straight with a kink to the left exiting the arena and into the top end of the track. This then goes into a gentle right hander into a 90 degree right turn followed shortly thereafter by another 90 degree right turn. This is then followed by a sweep left then right then left and a 90 degree left into the long straight followed by a tight right hand u-turn down the long straight and back into the arena for a 360 degree drift and then over the finish line to stop the clock.
We had an impressive array of vehicles – plenty different BMWs from xDrives to Classics, naturally aspirated to forced induced.
A great day was had by all and we will most certainly be back next year – likely with twice as many competitors next time!
