The BMW Car Club Gauteng hosted its first Bridgestone track and race day for the year at the Red Star Raceway in Delmas on Saturday 9 February 2019. Being the first one for the year, eager competitors and adrenaline starved speed junkies arrived at the crack of dawn to get ready for the day's track action. This was also the first time the BMW Car Club Gauteng returned to the tight and twisty venue since August 2017, and this time around would also see us running our trackday and two races in an anti-clockwise direction.
Red Star Raceway also has great off track facilities. There are a limited number of chalets at very good rates as well as plenty of space for camping or parking your caravan. A few of the committee members and participants made use of this, and arrived late on Friday afternoon, setting up “camp” and lighting the fires to usher in a weekend of driving fun and on track action.
The day kicked off with the usual scrutineering and registration process. After the drivers briefing was taken care of, the action started with the first practice session of our ever popular Bridgestone BMW Club Racing Series at 8 o' clock. This was followed by the first of the time trial sessions, with the cars divided into three groups, and group 1 cars going out on track first. Sessions were divided into 15 minute intervals as the Group 2 and 3 drivers also headed out on track for their first adrenaline fix of the day.
We also had our two BMW CCG resident race cars, "Manny" and "Sandbag" available for hot laps on the day. This is always a real treat for those who have never experienced the thrill of going flat-out around a track, and the fact that it was in a stripped out and caged race car, made it even more memorable. For only R100 per person for two flying laps, it proved very popular, and quite a few spectators lined up for their turn and associated adrenaline fix.
Fastest time trial BMW of the day was Leon Loubser, with a time of 2:02.234. The fastest non-BMW was Pieter Zeelie in his Toyota MR2, with a time of 1:58.930. The two BMW CCG club races were also hugely exciting and entertaining, with Kashen Naicker taking the class A victory, Andreas Meier victorious in class B, Craig Ball in class C, Nek Makris in class D, and Alan Hilligenn taking the spoils in class E. The fastest laptime for a BMW racecar also belonged to Kashen Naicker, with a time of 1:58.722, which he set during qualifying.
We would like to take this opportunity to again thank our sponsor for the day, Bridgestone for making the day possible. Without your support we would not be able to host these events and stretch the legs of our Bavarian (and other) beauties in a safe and enjoyable environment to their full capabilities.
For our next track day on the 11th May, we are heading back to the ever popular Zwartkops Raceway. Hope to see you there!
