Sunday the 19th of August marked a pioneering day in the history of the BMW Car Club Gauteng. For the first time we held Bridgestone all Tar Autocross at a venue other than Tarlton.
Over the years the surface at Tarlton that we ran the Autocross at has deteriorated resulting a very rough and bumpy ride, but a nonetheless enjoyable event.Instead of running a second instalment at Tarlton we tried out the very impressive The Rock Raceway in Brakpan which has a beautifully smooth tar surface and track.
We arrived to a rather chilly and dark morning in Brakpan as winter breathed its final icy breath. We then set out the cones and timing equipment for the track, followed by driver’s briefing and a prayer before everyone did a slow sighting run in convey to get a feel for the lay of the land. Each competitor would get three runs that counted with a bonus run if there was time.Ultimately everyone got four runs with their slowest run discarded and the average of the remaining runs counting for the trophies later in the day.
Each competitor would line up in the arena at the start line and once signalled that timing was ready, they broke the beam to start the timer.First up is a gentle 180 degree right hander into a tight slalom followed by a gentle 180 degree left hander into a short straight then a tight right hand u-turn into another short straight with a kink to the left exiting the arena and into the top end of the track. This then goes into a gentle right hander into a 90 degree right turn followed shortly thereafter by another 90 degree right turn. This then is followed by a sweep left then right then left and a 90 degree left into the long straight followed by a tight right hand u-turn down the long straight and back into the arena for a 360 degree drift and then over the finish line to stop the clock.
We had an impressive array of vehicles – plenty different BMWs from xDrives to Classics, naturally aspirated to forced induced. Then there were some drift and spin cars, some supercars and even some impressive bakkies!
A great day was had by all and we will most certainly be back next year – likely with twice as many competitors next time!
