As is tradition by now, the BMW Car Club Gauteng kicked off its activities for the year with a 2 hour endurance go-kart race at the ever popular Zwartkops go-kart track. The event is always very popular with club members and was once again fully booked with roughly 70 competitors eager to show off their driving skill on the technically challenging 1km course.
Teams are divided into teams of 5 members, with each driver limited to a maximum stint of 15 minutes per session. This might sound like a relatively short drive, but after 15 minutes you can certainly feel you’ve had a bit of a work out! After Jeff from MCP Rental Carts did the drivers briefing and carts were allocated to the teams, drivers headed out onto track for the warm up lap.
With 14 carts heading into the tight hairpin first corner, some drivers were already facing the wrong way even before making their way around the first corner! Much bumping and barging ensued as drivers were fighting for position, with even the smallest of errors seeing drivers losing two or three positions if a mistake was made in those closely contested first few laps.
After the first driver change the race started settling into a bit of a rhythm, with the fastest drivers setting some very competitive and close times. Lap times kept coming down throughout the 2 hour race, as driver confidence and grip increased, with the top teams setting times very close to each other, in the 1:01 region. The difference in the top 3 lap times (in different carts) was only 4 tenths of a second.
It was a nail biting affair right down to the last corner, with the difference between the carts in first and second position being only 0.152 seconds, after 2 hours of racing! It doesn’t get any closer than that. With their consistent and fast times, and well executed driver changes, it was kart nr. 9 of Thouca Mechanicos and his team, that took top spot, followed in that close second position by the nr.7 cart of team Gualtieri, and in third position was cart nr 1, also only 35.667 seconds behind.
Final results for the day were as follows:
Colin van Son
Bernard de Gouveia
Umberto da Silva
Jaco du Plessis
Ruan van Rooyen
Louis du Plessis
Matt Janse van Rensburg
Jason Janse van Rensburg
