The BMW Car Club Gauteng hosted its third Bridgestone track day for the year at the twisty Red Star Raceway in Delmas on Saturday 5 August 2017, proudly hosted by Auto Alpina Boksburg & BMW Bedfordview. Giving petrolheads and car enthusiasts the opportunity to safely enjoy their cars in a controlled environment, our trackdays are always popular events, with 46 entries on the day.
Red Star Raceway also has great off track facilities. There are a limited number of chalets at very good rates as well as plenty of space for camping or parking your caravan. A few of the committee members and participants made use of this, and arrived late on Friday afternoon, setting up “camp” and lighting the fires to usher in a weekend of driving fun and on track action.
The day kicked off with the usual scrutineering and registration process. After the drivers briefing was taken care of, the group 1 cars started hitting the track for the first time trial sessions from around 8 o’ clock.Sessions were divided into 15 minute intervals as the Group 2 and 3 drivers also headed out on track for their first adrenaline fix of the day.
If you haven’t quite gathered the confidence to take your own car around a track, or if you simply want to experience the thrill and excitement of going flat out around a race track, then our ever popular hot lap sessions could be just what you are looking for. For only R100 per person, a BMW Driving Experience instructor will take you around the track for two unforgettable flying laps in one of the M3 Driving Experience cars. These guys are super knowledgeable and helpful and will happily answer any questions you have regarding track driving.
The M parade for dealer customers and competitors also proved to be as popular as ever. It might not be at serious pace, but it gives many owners a small taste of having their car on track amongst other enthusiasts. More than anything, the sight of a track full of M vehicles leaves a real lump in the throat and is something to behold.
Our track days are not only popular with BMW drivers, but also with enthusiasts driving other performance machinery, with some Nissan GTR’s and Subaru’s also putting in amazing lap times. Most noteworthy of these being Edrich Zwiers in his flying R35 GT-R with a lap time of 1:58.876 and Peter Zeelie in his Toyota MR2 with a time of 2:00.564, just missing out on the sub 2:00. Clinton Spence in his Subaru Impreza WRX Sti also put in some great lap times, with a fastest time of 2:09.544. But, ultimately there can only be one, and the fastest time of the day went to none other than Leon Loubser in his awesome BMW E92 335i, with an incredible time of 1:57.948.
The top ten results for the day were as follows:

We would like to take this opportunity to again thank our sponsors for the day, Bridgestone and Auto Alpina Boksburg & BMW Bedfordview for making the day possible. Without your generosity we would not be able to host these events and use our Bavarian (and other) beauties in a safe and enjoyable environment to their full capabilities.
For our next track day and back by popular demand, we are heading to the fantastic Phakisa circuit, which we haven’t visited since 2015. The on-track action will start with an open session on the Friday afternoon already, so there will be plenty of track time to enjoy this great circuit, with a whole weekend of driving fun on 15 and 16 September including a Slalom Challenge and Handicap Pursuit Race. Entry to Phakisa also guarantees entry to the big one, our Kyalami track day on Saturday the 28th October, so hope we will see you there!
