The BMW Car Club Gauteng had its mid-year breakfast run, hosted by Melrose Arch Auto BMW, on Sunday the 30th July. It was a beautiful winter’s morning and breakfast runners started arriving at the dealership from 8 a.m., where they were treated to coffee and muffins.
There was also the opportunity to look at the beautiful cars on display in the showroom, which included an i8. After registration we gathered for a quick briefing, discussing the breakfast run route and proceedings for the rest of the day. As is always the case at our breakfast runs, there was a wide variety of BMW’s participating, ranging from rare classics up to the latest fire breathing M models.
Around 9 o’ clock we departed for our destination, the beautiful Kloofzicht lodge. It was a brand new venue for the BMW Car Club Gauteng and one we were very much looking forward to visiting, as it is beautifully situated in the Cradle of Humankind. The planned route was around 130km and would take participants via the N14 highway and R512, with a left turn onto the R3. Here you will find what is probably one of the nicest stretches of tarmac left in Gauteng, if you want to stretch your car’s legs a bit. It takes you past the Hartebeeshoek Radio Astronomy Observatory where you will eventually get to a T-junction, and then make a left turn towards Kloofzicht lodge, past the Sterkfontein caves.
With most of the participants arriving from around 10 o’ clock, it was a nice sight to see the parking area filled up with beautiful Bavarian machinery. Kloofzicht cordoned off a section of the parking for us, so we could all park together. Some of us were even treated to some game viewing on the drive down to the venue upon entering the lodge, as the nature reserve upon which Kloofzicht is built, is home to kudu, impala, blue wildebeest, eland, red hartebeest, springbuck, gemsbok, zebra as well as a fascinating array of bird life.
Walking through the reception area one is greeted by the beautiful views of the Zwartkops Mountains and the fly fishing dams, where eager fishermen were practicing their craft. With more than 120 people in attendance, we were hosted in the dolomite and quartz rooms, with the built in gas fires adding to the warmth and ambiance of the venue. The breakfast menu was a real treat, with a wide variety of hot and cold dishes to choose from.
With our stomachs full after a delicious breakfast, we started departing from Kloofzicht from around 12 o’ clock onwards, for a leisurely drive home. Some of us decided to stay for a few drinks (and eventually a late lunch), and to enjoy the beautiful views a bit longer. Unfortunately time always flies when you are having fun and it was over way too soon.
We would once again like to thank Danica and the Melrose Arch Auto BMW team for their hospitality and for making the day possible. We hope to see you at our next breakfast run, which will be on the 26th November 2017. Remember to book early to avoid disappointment!
