Bridgestone BMW CCG Zwartkops Track Day Hosted by Auto Alpina Boksburg
Story: Rupert Giessing
With the unfortunate cancellation of our Red Star track day earlier this year, the last opportunity that our time trial participants had to get some track time was way back in March, at Phakisa. So with that “need for speed” craving getting exponentially worse over time, it was great to see that over fifty cars entered our Zwartkops event, lining up for scrutineering from 6:30 a.m. on a rather chilly July winter’s morning.
Cars headed out on track from about 9 o’ clock after all the admin and paperwork was taken care of, and they were divided into three groups, depending on lap times and driver skill and experience. Group one is the fastest with the serious track weapons gunning for top time trial honors. This is followed by the cars in groups two and three, with each group getting fifteen minutes of track time per session. This sequence is then repeated throughout the day, meaning that everyone gets plenty of track time, and the opportunity to get that one perfect lap in.
Our time trial events are extremely competitive with less than a second separating the top three cars (all BMW’s) on the day. Fastest BMW and also fastest lap time of the day, went to Gianni Giannoccaro in his E92 M3 GT with a blistering time of 01:02.07, beating Leon Loubser in his E92 335i by 0.8 seconds. Kashen Naiker in his E90 335i, was third fastest with a time of 1:03.6 seconds, only 0.1 seconds behind Leon.
With the return of our race series to our track days in 2018, attending one of these events is also very enjoyable from a spectator perspective. You get to see some of the most competitive and entertaining racing, as well as some of the most beautifully prepared BMW race cars in the country. Kashen Naiker was the double race winner on the day. You can read all about the day’s racing action, by CLICKING HERE.
There were also lots of other activities during the day. In the morning, we had a session where kids from the 1st Boksburg Scout Group were treated to a few laps around the track in some of our BMW CCG race series cars, an experience they will surely remember for a long time. Our sponsor for the day, Auto Alpina Boksburg, had a parade during lunchtime and spectators also had the opportunity to go for some “hotlaps” and experience the unbelievable performance of some of BMW’s finest machinery on track. Auto Alpina Boksburg provided an M3, as well as the fire breathing new M5 there for the day. If you’ve never been around a race track before, it really is a “must do” if you want to find out firsthand what these cars can do, in the capable hands of the BMW Driving Experience instructors.
Spectators that were keen to have a race car experience were also in for a treat, as we had our BMW Car Club Gauteng track taxi “Sandbag”, an E46 325i Touring, doing duty on the day. Sandbag is semi stripped out and fully caged, so it really is a treat to go for a few laps in our “taxi”, as can be seen from the smiles on people’s faces as they emerge from the car afterwards!
Auto Alpina Boksburg had a great range of BMW Lifestyle accessories on display on the day, and we also had our very popular BMW Car Club Gauteng regalia on sale. If you can’t make it to one of our events, the BMW CCG range of regalia can also be viewed and purchased by CLICKING HERE.
As is always the case, time flies way too quickly when you are having fun, and just like that it was 5 o’ clock and the end of track time for the day. Prize giving was at Chicanes Sports Lounge, with lots of special memories of the day being shared until much later in the evening.
Once again a BIG thank you to our sponsors, Bridgestone and Auto Alpina Boksburg, for making the day possible. Without your support, we would not be able to do what we love in a safe and controlled environment.
