Days have passed in anticipation and I couldn't wait to experience my first Bridgestone xDrive challenge sponsored by Cedar Isle Auto BMW. With hot dry weather the entire week, the event was going to be impeccable. Until Murphy arrived of course, and it rained.
The curve ball was that the dirt pan we were originally going to use was too wet and soggy so would be torn apart with BMW power. So we had to improvise. And we did. We made a plan, using a patch of unused muddy road, we made a tight gymkhana course. Starting out you have a right emergency lane change followed by a slalom into a 180 degree u-turn back through the slalom into a left emergency lane change to stop in the muddy garage before you end sliding into the kitchen.
Each participant got to attempt the course with the 2016 BMW X1 2.0d xDrive. It was an amazing experience and really brought to life exactly what the BMW xDrive can do. Maneuvering through the mud testing, the entire cars xDrive system. The first of the 2 groups had a very wet circuit with average times around 50 seconds. As the sun appeared and the weather cleared, the course dried out and the second group broke the 30 second barrier. Not without big smiles of course!
Once the first group had done the gymkhana, half way through the morning we moved on to the 4x4 challenge while the first group who did the 4x4 challenge did the gymkhana. Testing the range of BMW xDrive vehicles, I jumped into the BMW x3 and was surprised at how well it had maneuvered through the course and how much fun it was, the x3 has the ride height yet the x6 ///M5.0d had the power and sophisticated technologies to get through it all. Today was an eye opener and even I learnt alot of the capabilities of the xDrive vehicles which were supplied by Cedar Isle Auto BMW.
It was truly an amazing experience and I spoke to a number of the clients and members that attended and were very impressed with the x vehicles' capabilities especially the xDrive and Hill descent control which came in handy a few times on the 4x4 adventure course. One of the clients was so surprised he told me "I never knew a BMW could do such things and handle it so well". A couple of first timers there that were initially hesitant but after the first run they realized how much fun it was and even the first timers wanted to do it again. Some of the ladies were weary at first but after they had attempted the course, they wanted to go again! It is great to see ladies at events so guys watch out!
After everyone had attempted both the gymkhana and 4x4 course, we were treated to a great lunch of legendary chicken prego rolls. Prize giving was held just after lunch where the top 3 Cedar Isle Auto clients and Top 3 BMW Car Club Gauteng members based on their gymkhana times received prizes. We also had a prize for the fastest lady from Cedar Isle Auto and from the Club. Looking forward to the next xDrive event in November. A huge thank you to Bridgestone and Cedar Isle BMW for sponsoring the day.
