As has been tradition for the last couple of years, Saturday the 6th of February 2016 saw the inaugural event for the 2016 BMW Car Club Gauteng Event Calendar with a social event in the form of a team “Le Mans Style” endurance go-karting event. This again took place at the world class Zwartkops International Kart Raceway.
The format of the Le Mans Style endurance has each kart lined up at the start grid and the red lights count down and then go off as the race begins. For safety reasons, after 12 minutes, there has to be a driver change and the winning team is the team who completes the most laps after two hours. Each team consists of 5 drivers, with a total of 11 teams (as Zwartkops have 12 karts with one spare in case of a breakdown).
Although it is a social event, it seems to get highly competitive very quickly without getting out of hand. The event ran like clockwork with the only small blemish being some teams speeding in the pits for the driver change which is highly dangerous and in future they will be penalised with a drive-through penalty.
After 2 hours the standings were as follows:
Carlo Garbini, Johnny Araujo, Johnny Markatselis, Sav Gualtieri, Tony Colaro
Dimitri Fameliaris, Dino Fameliaris, Julian Fameliaris, Lorenzo Gualtieri, Theo Papadimitriou
Anton van Tonder, Jordan Hooligan, Mike Dodd, Trevor Long, Warren Dodd
Andre Adlem, Danie Botha, Eric Vermeulen, Quintin Knoetze, Ruan Bronkhorst
Chris Theron, Dean Kendal, Jorge Estrela, Paulo angelo loureiro, Rick Loureiro
Andreas Meier, Joanne Cloete, Manny Ribeiro, Paul MunroChristal Long,
Cameron McNab, Guy Patron, Jason Yan, Johan Booysen, Rory Macnab
Ashley Kennel, Dalyn Gulston, Jacques Visser, Shane Grobler, Shaun Changuiln
Christal Long, Colin van Son, Paul Steyn, Phillip Steyn, Ryan van Son

This event has grown tremendously in popularity from a humble 32 participants in 2014 to a full house of 55 participants in 2015 and 2016. There have even been requests for us to try and cram another go-karting social into our already packed calendar.
